In part, the recent redevelopment of the former Cinderella City site into the Englewood CityCenter and the proximity of the RTD Light Rail line generated renewed interest in revitalizing Downtown Englewood. In 1996, the Englewood City Council established its Cultural Arts Commission to create a public arts program.
When voters in the Metro area counties created the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), it was clear that people were awakening to the importance of the arts. A group of Englewood citizens recognized that many residents had long embraced the arts, but there were few outlets for art and live performances. These citizens started to DREAM.
As a Special Committee of the Cultural Arts Commission, an Exploratory Committee was formed in 1999 and charged with the task of determining the feasibility of an arts and education facility in Englewood, and to develop a business plan for such a center. In 1999, the Exploratory Committee identified the need for a resource that honors and embraces the belief that creative thinking is as vital to a society’s health and growth as adequate housing and a clean environment. One that is a friendly, secure place where anyone can explore and discover the power of communication through the arts; a place where the creative spirit is permitted to soar to amazing heights. One that offers to young people an abundance of constructive events and activities that teach, that are wholesome, and that are safe and affordable.
Englewood Cultural Arts Center Association (Englewood Arts), a 501(c)3 charity, was created through the efforts of the Englewood Cultural Arts Commission and the City of Englewood. The Comprehensive Business Plan for a cultural arts center was completed in 2000 by the Exploratory Committee and approved in principle in September 6, 2001, by the Englewood City Council.
Englewood Arts is a community resource dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults through art education, performance and partnerships -- providing metro area residents, students and visiting artists the opportunity to discover, develop and share creative talents and abilities.
Since it's inception, Englewood Arts has operated as an "art center without walls."
Englewood Arts is made up of volunteers who bring together a variety of backgrounds. The membership of Englewood Arts represents a broad range of interests and skills pertaining to the arts and business. Members are called upon to contribute according to their expertise and interests, but all share the desire to bring the arts to Englewood.
